  2. "8 BEAT" data from a Korg i3 Interactive Workstation
  3.  
  4. This archive contains 3 x Standard  MIDI  Files  (SMF)  in  file  format  1
  5. derived from the "8 BEAT"  STYLE  and  BACKING  SEQUENCE  DATA on a Korg i3
  6. Interactive Workstation. In order to play  these SMFs then you are required
  7. to copy  the  accompanying  "8_BEAT.PCG"  voice   file,  included  in  this
  8. archive,  to  a  720k MSDOS formatted DD  floppy disk and load this via the
  9. Korg's  own built-in disk drive. The  "8_BEAT.PCG" file contains the USER D
  10. Bank with  additional  64  voices and  the  2  x  USER Kits #7 and #8.. The
  11. "8_BEAT.LST" is an  ASCII text list of the actual Korg voices and drum kits
  12. used in the "8_BEAT.PCG" file..

  21. Additional information:
  22. The SMFs featured here will play  on  a  number of Korg synthersizer models
  23. with particular emphasis on the i-Series and X-Series models..
  24.  
  25. i-Series models:
  26. i2, i3, i4S, i5S and i5M
  27.  
  28. X-Series models:
  29. X2, X3 and X3R
  30.  
  31. The ".PCG" file containing the 64 voice  and  2   x Kits file is capable of
  32. loading into ALL the above Korg models  as  they  share the same voices and
  33. song file types.. The SMFs will  also  load  from  floppy directly into the
  34. on-board 16 track SMF sequencer on ALL the above Korg i-Series and X-Series
  35. models.. Or will play from software  and  hardware  sequencers  as  the SMF
  36. is portable  across  computer  platforms,  synth   Workstations   and  Data
  37. Filer/SMF players with an SMF import option..

  39. For those with other Korg synth models  which share the same AI2 Synthesis,
  40. then the CTLs in each MIDI track embedded within each SMF will contain CTLs
  41. like so...

  45.         PGM             (#1-64 is the C Bank, #65-128 is the D USER Bank
  46.  
  47. ...which signifies both the C and D  BANKs  on the i-Series and 0-65 on the
  48. X-Series.. The MIDI PGM (Voice program) #1-64  refers to the inbuilt C Bank
  49. on the  i-Series  synths  and  #65-128  is  the  USER  Bank  D..  Drums and
  50. Percussion are refered to by the  embedded  MIDI  CTLs within each SMF like
  51. so..

  58. The USER Kits can be configured  to  contain  GM  Kits #25 (Electronic Kit)
  59. and  #65 (Room Kit)

  61. Korg's own i-Series bootup disk which comes shipped with the i2/i3 contains
  62. an "AMERICA.PCG" file containing #25  (Dance  Kit) and #65 (Percussion Kit)
  63. which are default i-Series  Kits..  The  Percussion  Kit contains different
  64. instruments and mapping compared to the  mapping  of GM kits! Likewise, any
  65. style can come with its own  unique  USER  Kit  and will usually be denoted
  66. within the accompanying ".LST" (List) file..  Again,  the 2 x USER kits can
  67. possess their own unique  instruments  and  mapping  which may be radically
  68. different to that of General MIDI (GM) but as these are USER then both kits
  69. can be edited  via  the  USER  Kit  mapping  option  on  the  Korg i-Series
  70. Workstations software!

  72. Alternatively,  if  you  wish  to  take  a  note  of  each  drum/percussion
  73. instrument used within the 2 x  USER  kits  then  venturing to the USER Kit
  74. mapper option within the Korg  i-Series  on-board software will display the
  75. instruments used, if you produced  a  simple  instrument table on A4 paper,
  76. maybe you could fill this in with the corresponding instruments for each of
  77. the 2 x USER kit maps.
